Lucia Day At Home 2022

Updated: Dec 13, 2022

Celebrate Santa Lucia Day at home with our 2022 Official Oregon Lucia Crowning, our Lucia Day video starring Nordic Northwest’s official 2021 Oregon Lucia Court, a Lussekatter recipe by Jamie Stone, owner of Jamie’s Kafferep, Lucia crown templates by Willow of Wonder and Sankta Lucia by Portland Nordic Chorus!

An Oregon tradition since 1956, the Lucia, Queen of Light program puts young women with and interest in Nordic heritage in touch with this beloved legend of Scandinavia, while offering them the opportunity to serve their community and receive Scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $1,000. The official Oregon Lucia is crowned each year at NNW’s ScanFair in December. Lucia and her court members appear at various Nordic events during the holiday season and throughout the year.

How is St. Lucia Day celebrated today?

Families observe St. Lucia's Day in their homes by having one of their daughters (traditionally the oldest) dress in white and serve coffee and baked goods, such as saffron bread (Lussekatter) and ginger biscuits (Pepparkakor), to the other members of the family in the morning. Make Lussekatter

Bake traditional Lucia cookies with this delicious recipe from Jamie Stone of Jamie’s Kafferep. Jamie has been a part of the Nordic community in Portland for over a decade, dancing with Leikarringen of Portland, volunteering and being a part of Nordic Northwest’s Youth Task Force. You can eat his creations at Broder and can also currently find Jamie’s Kafferep at the Hillsdale Farmer's market where he offers traditional Swedish and German baked goods.
