Discover the art of coil basketry in this hands-on class perfect for beginners. Coil basketry, unlike weaving, stiches the basket together. Called bindingsteknikk in Norwegian, coil basketry has been around for millennia. One of the oldest coil baskets found in the Nordic countries is from 834 from the Oseberg ship excavation in Norway. In this workshop, you will learn how to start a coil basket, and build upon the initial loop.
About the instructor
Jesse Maack is the Program and Exhibit Assistant at Nordic Northwest and has worked here since the fall of 2022. Originally from Portland, they left in August 2017 to attend a 9-month photography program at Lofoten Folk High School in Northern Norway. After Jesse returned to Portland, they studied at Lewis & Clark College where they majored in Studio Art. Off the clock, Jesse collaborates with plants and fungi to create artwork that reflects on how people can help ecosystems thrive for a resilient future.
