The seventeenth-century colony of New Netherland was settled by people of different races, ethnicities, and religious backgrounds, including a sizable number of Scandinavians. Author Sandra Freels will discuss the research that underlies her debut novel Anneke Jans in the New World, the fictional biography of a young Norwegian woman who arrived on Manhattan in 1630 to play her role in shaping a vibrant and diverse society unlike anything the world had ever seen before.
