In partnership with the Bodecker Foundation, Scan Design Foundation, and featuring SCRAP Creative Reuse Pdx, and ReClaim It by Cracked Pots.
Come to this family-friendly event and learn how to turn “trash” into treasured art!
This event is the perfect time to visit our Ole Bolle troll, whether it is the first or the fifth time! We are taking inspiration from artist Thomas Dambo, the recycle artist and activist who created Ole Bolle. Recycling and reusing items is one of the best ways to keep our planet clean.
Why throw away when you can reuse? At this event you’ll reuse cardboard, wood, paint, plastic, and much, much more.
Birdhouse Decorating
Our Ole Bole troll is part of the Way of the Bird King project by Thomas Dambo. All along the United States bird houses were hung along with Dambo trolls. This is your opportunity to decorate your very own birdhouse. We will have a limited supply of birdhouses, all made from recycled wood. This is an optional add-on to the event. The $10 ticket includes a birdhouse and an extra raffle entry.
Fairy House Making with Bodecker Foundation
Make your own fairy house out of natural forest materials like bark, twigs, acorns, moss, leaves, and vines, as well as reuse materials provided by SCRAP. This is free, no ticket purchase required.
Troll Cardboard Costume Creating with Bodecker Foundation
Create your own wearable giant troll hands and feet from cardboard! Make a costume inspired by Ole Bolle or something from your own imagination. Materials are provided, but bringing your own cardboard is encouraged! This is free, no ticket purchase required.
SCRAP Pdx Crafts and Donation Station
Learn from the pros at SCRAP Creative Reuse where they take in mountains of donated materials, sort them, organize them, and teach folks how to use them creatively! At the SCRAP tables, you can create Cork Creatures and fill a bag from their free “Mini Mall” of reuse materials to use on other crafts at the event, and at home!
SCRAP will also be accepting donations of reuse items at the event. Your trash will become someone else’s treasure!
The most needed items are listed below. If you don’t have any of these, check their Accepted Materials list online at https://portland.scrapcreativereuse.org/Material_Donation. No items from their Accepted Materials will be turned away, but they would like to focus on collecting the most needed at the moment, which are:
- Notions (These items: Yarn, Fabric (yardage only, no scraps), Universal and jersey/stretch sewing machine needles)
- Art Supplies (These items: Canvases new and used, Sketch Pads, Art Paints (no aerosols or house paint), Paint Brushes, Glue (no aerosols), Tape
- Odds & Ends (These items: Jewelry, Beads, Frames (instact, no glass w/out a frame or broken glass)
- Craft Supplies (These items: Glue Sticks (Elmer’s or UHU brands), Low-temperature mini hot-glue guns, Dual-temperature mini hot-glue sticks, “WorkPro” cordless hot glue guns, Pom-poms, Mod Podge, Googly Eyes, Thin Straws)
How to bring your donations: Please organize your items so they can be seen clearly. Bag like items together (ex: glue in one bag, beads in another). Bring your donation in a bag, box, or container that can be left behind.
ReClaim It Table and Trash Panda Tails Learn about ReClaim it where they visit the Municipal Transfer Station (aka: the “dump”) and find amazing things to save and refurbish. Their motto is Reuse, Repair, Reimagine! Make your own magic wand, and Trash Panda Tail like their mascot Trashleigh!
