Welcome to the beautiful world of Swedish crafts. The Oro is an ancient craft and a beautiful hanging piece of art. It was said to bring good luck and protection from evil spirits. In this class we will make modern versions, informed by tradition, using seasonal flowers, ribbons, recycled materials, and plant materials gathered by your instructor.
In the spirit of folk crafts we will slide back and forth from deep concentration to lively conversation. This is a chance to connect to yourself and to history, as well as the other participants. You will also learn about the history, linguistics, and spirit of the Oro.
About the Instructor
Anna Svensson is a Swedish artist based in Portland, Oregon. Growing up in Sweden in a family of crafters, Anna was trained in Sloyd from a young age. She learned to use whatever resources were available at the time and make the best of it.
Anna has a deep love for Folk art and its potency of meaning and history. In Folk art, the beauty lies in the imperfections. That view opens the door to endless interpretations and happy little mistakes.
