About

Dive into a hands-on workshop that blends craft, sustainability, and storytelling. In this Icelandic Fish Leather Bookmark Workshop, participants will create their own one-of-a-kind bookmark using beautifully textured fish leather, an ancient material reimagined for modern use. You’ll learn about the unique qualities of salmon and cod leather, explore simple leatherworking techniques, and leave with a functional piece that carries both history and intention.

No prior experience is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to try something new. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into how traditional materials can be transformed through contemporary design, and how even everyday objects can hold deeper meaning.

About the Instructor

This workshop is led by Ellen who owns Solfiskur (meaning “sunfish” in Icelandic), a collection of jewelry, accessories, and functional goods crafted from sustainably sourced fish leather. Their connection to this material began in Iceland, where they discovered fish leather at a small tannery and were drawn to its durability, texture, and rich history—once used by Vikings for everything from shoes to weatherproof garments.

Today, that legacy continues through a modern lens of sustainability. Using salmon and cod leather tanned with 100% geothermal energy in North Iceland, Solfiskur transforms what is often considered waste into beautiful, functional design. Rooted in a commitment to minimizing waste and honoring materials, their work supports a more circular approach to fashion and storytelling through craft.
