About
Join us for an evening with Monica Setziol-Phillps, the artist who, with some input from her father, designed and carved Nordia House’s front doors. Her talk will go over the process of creating the doors, her own practice, and touch on the works of her father, Leroy Setziol, sometimes referred to as “the father of Northwest woodcarving.”
About the Speaker
Monica Setziol-Phillips is a talented weaver, carver, and cut-paper artist, and the daughter of renowned Northwest sculptor Leroy Setziol.
A lifelong artist, Monica has dedicated years to the crafts of weaving, carving, and paper cutting. She shares her life with her husband, retired Oregon Shakespeare Festival actor JP Phillips, in Sheridan, Oregon. Monica’s work is held in numerous private collections, and she has had the honor of teaching at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology for over 15 years. She believes that everyone has an inherent creative spirit that deserves to be nurtured.
In 2005, Monica’s father, Leroy Setziol, was commissioned to carve two doors for Nordia House. Due to health challenges, he was unable to fulfill the commission, passing it on to Monica with Roy’s guidance on the design. In 2018, Monica and Leroy had the opportunity to showcase their work together in a retrospective exhibit at Nordia House, celebrating their shared legacy.
