OFF-CAMPUS: Slöyd Experience: Kids Woodworking Classes

Because of popular demand we are opening a new series of off-campus, Saturday classes in Southeast Portland!

Slöyd is a historical Scandinavian method of education that used woodworking to develop character in children. Still utilized today in some of the highest performing schools around the globe, key elements of the original Theory of Educational Sloyd by Otto Salomon have been replicated and cited in our offering. Its an engaging woodworking program tailored for students ages 6-14, designed to foster character development during their formative years.

Each month a student signs up the course will build upon what they have learning before. It is learning at their pace. You can sign up for multiple classes in a row or skip and come back a few months later.

About the Instructor

Nicholas Maier worked as a Creative Shop Lead at Matchless Builds since its beginning, a custom fabrication and sculpture studio in NW Portland. He graduated from PSU with a degree in Art Practices and loves teaching, working and volunteering. He is the founder of Skillcraft Institute a local non-profit whose mission is to provide resources, education, and opportunities for under-served youth seeking creative, fulfilling, and sustainable careers in Portland.

This class occurs monthly on the third Saturday of the month from August 2026 until March 2026. There are four available timeslots each Sunday.
