About
Inspired by a sea chest discovered in the Oseberg ship burial, this hands-on workshop invites participants to build a scaled-down, display-size replica of a Viking Age chest. Pre-cut wooden pieces will be provided, allowing students to focus on assembly, light sanding, and finishing the chest with non-toxic cutting board oil. Participants may also use a wood-burning tool to add a Viking Age–inspired design to the lid for a decorative touch.
Throughout the workshop, the instructor, Geoff Skousen, will share insights into Viking Age carpentry techniques and material culture, connecting the building process to historical practice.
About the Instructor
Geoff Skousen is the owner of Vinland Craftsman. He holds a Master's Degree in Medieval Literature and has also spent years studying the history of carpentry. His workshop is located in Portland, Oregon and many of his creations attempt to bring the past alive and to make history feel accessible.
