Author and translator Barbara Sjoholm will read from her new landmark translation of Sámi folktales, originally collected in Northern Norway by the linguist Just Knut Qvigstad and the Sámi politician and folklorist Isak Saba at the turn of the 19th century. This selection of 300 traditional narratives, often overlooked in other folktale anthologies from the Nordic countries, is their first appearance in English. With stories of the ogre Stállu, hidden folk and talking animals, younger sons and wise old women, the folktales are a treasure trove of magical fairytales and eerie legends set among the coastal and mountain landscapes of the high north.
Barbara Sjoholm has published numerous books of nonfiction, translation, and fiction about the Sámi, including the historical novel, The Reindeer of Chinese Gardens, about the Sámi who came from Finnmark to the Pacific Northwest in 1898.
