Nordic countries have a rich history of woodworking. In this workshop we want to embrace the Swedish idea of slöjd, meaning handiwork or handicraft. Woodwork is an essential part of this idea and is a large part of Swedish history. The slöjd philosophy includes creating functional items for everyday use.
This class is designed to give you a solid foundation to start your green woodworking journey, exploring the tools, materials and techniques used in green wood spoon carving, this class will focus mainly on knife skills, but axe work will be demonstrated. Wood and tools will be provided, spoon blanks will also be offered for sale for folks who are interested.
Meet Your Instructor
Leslie Andrew Walters, Oregon City, Oregon. A passionate tree lover and Hand tool woodworker specializing in greenwood spoon carving, my work is strongly influenced by Scandinavian folk art as well as the tools and skills used by people who once and still live in northern forests around the world. I have been obsessively carving for 10+ years, traveling around the country, studying, learning and teaching spoon carving and traditional hand tool skills. I am also a founding member of the Portland Spoon Club, a monthly free get together giving spoon carvers and green woodworkers access to community and resources.
