Nordic countries have a rich history of woodworking. In this workshop we want to embrace the Swedish idea of slöjd, meaning handiwork or handicraft. Woodwork is an essential part of this idea and is a large part of Swedish history. The slöjd philosophy includes creating functional items for everyday use.
This class is designed to give you a solid foundation to start your green woodworking journey, exploring the tools, materials and techniques used in green wood spoon carving, this class will focus mainly on knife skills, but axe work will be demonstrated. Wood and tools will be provided, spoon blanks will also be offered for sale for folks who are interested.
Meet Your Instructor Steven Antholis
“I've been carving spoons by hand since 2018 and turning bowls and cups on the spring pole lathe since 2022. My journey began on a winter day taught by friends how to carve a spoon with an axe and a knife. Then, the introduction of the book Country Woodcraft by Drew Langsner solidified the devotion to this craft and these skills. So much of my process is focusing on the use of hand tools. Most of my primary shaping is with a carving axe, followed by an array of tools, new and restored, and tools I've forged myself. Both carving and turning are very physical but highly rewarding. I love creating useable objects for the table. I've worked as a farmer, a cook and a designer, and to complete the meal with wooden wares just makes the pleasure of eating that much more satisfying. I hope you get to enjoy many meals with my tableware.” Learn more at his website.
