About

The Humbling of Thor is a live storytelling performance rooted in one of the oldest artistic traditions in the Nordic world. Long before stories were written, myths were carried by skalds and bards who preserved history, values, and cultural memory through spoken word. This performance keeps that tradition alive, presenting oral storytelling as a living and vital part of Nordic culture today.

Set within the Norse mythological universe, the story follows Elli the All-Wise, an elder summoned by Odin to humble an out-of-control Thor. Told through a tapestry of original song and poetry alongside ancient stories and verse, the performance blends theatrical long-form storytelling with live music. The story is accompanied by Greek lyre and grand piano, creating a layered and immersive experience. Family friendly and symbolic, The Humbling of Thor explores themes of aging, balance, and inner power while offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience Nordic storytelling in a contemporary setting.

Meet your performer

Casey Schissler is a Portland-based artist, musician, composer, actress, and playwright whose work is rooted in traditional storytelling practices. After leaving a career in finance and project management in 2021, she began a period of artistic exploration that led her to study music, songwriting, and performance with mentors including Mike Elson, Stephanie Schneidermann, Emilie Faiella, Rochelle Nielsen, and the founders of Portland Storytelling Theater. Her musical background ranges from opera to jazz and ancestral singing, and has included performances at venues such as Carnegie Hall.

In 2024, while working at Broder Soder cafe located at the Nordic Northwest campus, Casey was invited to perform a Nordic-themed concert, which sparked the creation of her original one-woman show, The Humbling of Thor. That work also became the foundation of the Bardic Arts Revival, an artistic movement dedicated to preserving oral storytelling as a living cultural tradition. Through her performances, Casey seeks to reconnect modern audiences with myth, meaning, and the enduring power of shared stories.
