About
This program offers an engaging experience for anyone interested in Nordic craft, history, design, and cultural heritage. Drawing on the rich traditions of Scandinavian textile practices and examples from long-time personal collections, the presentation explores the history, techniques, cultural meanings, and contemporary evolution of Nordic textiles.
The unique topography and short growing seasons of the Scandinavian countries gave rise to distinctive methods of clothing and textile production, with everyday knitting and weaving in rural homes producing some of the most beautiful examples in the world. Beginning with a historical overview of fibers, construction, and decorative techniques, the program will include discussion of knits, woven cloth, dyes, and designs for garments and household linens.
Participants will have the opportunity to examine historical items on display and are encouraged to bring pieces from their own collections to share their history. The program will also explore how traditional techniques evolved into the well-known Scandinavian clothing and textile designs and brands that remain popular today.
