Nordic Northwest’s Community Spotlights celebrate the valuable contributions, enthusiasm, and achievements of members in the Nordic community. Thank you to all of our dedicated and supportive community members!

Meet Susan Schlesinger, lead docent for our very popular Fogelbo tours and a dedicated Fogelbo Forest Troll (an incredible group of volunteers who maintain the Fogelbo grounds). Susan's journey with Nordic Northwest began over 20 years ago when she followed in her parents' (Buster & Arvis Franks) footsteps, volunteering at Scanfair & ScanFeast (now Nordic Nights) and embracing her Nordic heritage. Susan’s involvement ramped up after the pandemic when she joined the Fogelbo Forest Troll group after retiring from her teaching job.
Originally from Eastern Washington, with Swedish & Norwegian roots, Susan’s college experience at Pacific Lutheran University included a study abroad program in Germany, where she later lived and worked with her husband before returning to the Pacific Northwest. Shortly after her return she founded a language program, created immersion camps during the summer and taught at Portland Community College. Susan was also the director of the German Saturday School of Portland for many years.
Now retired, Susan fills her days with lots of volunteering, music, gardening, and happy moments with her grandchildren. Susan's warmth and commitment shine through in every interaction, making her an invaluable asset to the Nordic community. For Susan, volunteering isn't only about giving back—it's about weaving connections, celebrating heritage, and passing on the torch of tradition.
Thank you so much for all you do, Susan!
What a wonderful spotlight on Susan! Her dedication to Nordic Northwest is truly inspiring. It's amazing how she found even more ways to contribute after retiring from teaching. It reminds me of how addictive some things can be, like volunteering or even a frustratingly simple game like Flappy Bird - you just keep coming back for more! Her passion for preserving and sharing her heritage is commendable, and it sounds like she's making a real difference.
It's so inspiring to read about Susan's dedication to Nordic Northwest! Following in her parents' footsteps and now contributing so much in retirement is truly admirable. The language programs and immersion camps she created sound like they had a huge impact. Makes you wonder what kind of fun, fulfilling life she might have created if she played a game like Bitlife – maybe a world-renowned linguist or a master gardener!
